So McCain finally did the right thing...

Well sort of. Problem is McCain's spin on it is not only disingenuous but  negative and pejorative as well, and once again the silence from the Obama camp is, so far at least, deafening...

Seems to me this development could be tailor-made to add some depth and gravitas to the Obama image. Here, on one hand, is a complex and nuanced politician who, because of his ultra-public status, has had to work his way through a deeply personal crisis of faith and conscience in full view of the voting public, and, to my mind at least, emerged bruised but much the better for it.

And on the other hand is a desperate and cynical politician well past his prime who essentially went begging for endorsements from the lunatic fringe with little or no motive but personal and political expediency. And when it finally rose up and bit him in the ass, he turns around and tries to make it sound like a minor miscalculation, while continuing to tar Obama for daring to give a brother a break until it became excruciatingly obvious that this particular brother didn't deserve one.

So here's a slight nod of the head, instead a tip of the hat, to John McCain. While both candidates pretty much brought their respective situations on themselves, only Barak had the intellectual honesty and the depth of soul to admit that his own sense of conviction and personal loyalty kept him from doing the politically expedient thing at a time when most folks wouldn't have given it a second thought.

Meanwhile, I'm not so sure McCain won't land on his feet yet again. The not-so-dead religious right shows a remarkable willingness to forgive a multitude of political sins, especially considering this year's opposition. Moral rectitude is apparently a fluid notion among these people (irony not lost on this old puppy), so I imagine this little hiccup will soon dissipate and once again come November the sheep will willingly flock to do their pastors' bidding and all will be (extreme) right with the world once again...
